Geeks Should Read...More Than Just Code

I just finished reading an incredible book that I wanted to write about and share with you.

This is Ghost In The Wires by Kevin Mitnik. This is a must read for anyone who enjoys action stories, technology, the history of hacking, the hacker mentality or even stories of unethical legal systems!

At first I was slightly worried that a man who's life revolves around writing computer code would struggle to write a story that could really pull me in. But in the first few chapters, after Mitnik discusses Social Engineering (what I discovered to be a huge part of hacking,) I knew that he would be a fabulous story teller. Mitnik far surpassed even that accolade.
Although not as well written as other crime books I have read, this book captured me with Mitnik's incredible memory and technical knowledge. Even now, decades after the events took place, Mitnik recites telephone numbers and hacking techniques that he was using. It was this attention and recall of detail that really wowed me and made me respect his story.
I don't want to give too much of the story away, so I will keep this short. This book took me on an emotional roller coaster from the very start. There were times when I just wanted to start shouting "BUT WHY?!" I'm glad to say that I was very pleased with Mitnik's ending to the story and after finishing the book I immediately jumped on YouTube to watch him and Woz (the engineer who built the first Apple computer) use the internet again (read the book to find out why.)
Just a short post, but if you're interested in computer hacking or just enjoy a thrilling tale of a charismatic and intelligent man, go buy the book. It's available on Amazon, Kindle edition, for only $7.99.
Until next time.
